Victor Moritz Goldschmidt Award –For early career scientists in recognition ofoutstanding research conductedwithin the past five years

Award Recipients

2002 – Astrid Holzheid

Metal–silicate trace element partitioning and core formation: Victor Moritz Goldschmidt Award presented to Astrid Holzheid for experimental insights into Earth's core formation.

From the laudation:

“Experimental studies on metal oxides in silicate melts, including investigations at very high pressures, which Astrid Holzheid carried out first in Cologne and later at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Bayerisches Geoinstitut, led to important new insights into the mechanisms of Earth's core formation. Her most significant contribution is undoubtedly the determination of metal–silicate partition coefficients of highly siderophile elements under upper mantle conditions. (...)

A striking feature of Astrid Holzheid's career is the large number of highly successful research stays at leading institutions in Germany, Scotland, and the United States, all of which resulted in significant scientific achievements.”
