Early Career Support–Opportunities for students andearly career researchers

The German Mineralogical Society supports students, doctoral researchers, and early-career scientists through funding programmes, training courses, networking opportunities, and opportunities to become actively involved in the scientific community.

The YoungMins

The Young Mineralogists (YoungMins) are the early-career network of the German Mineralogical Society. They bring together students, doctoral researchers, and scientists at the beginning of their careers, providing opportunities for exchange, guidance, and networking within the mineralogical community.

Travel Grants

The DMG supports early-career scientists in attending conferences and training courses. The aim is to promote scientific exchange and enable active participation in the international mineralogical community.

Travel Grants for Students

Student members can apply for travel grants to attend DMG events. Eligible events include meetings and training courses organised by the DMG sections and working groups, the DMG Annual Meeting, and doctoral courses offered within the DMG course programme. Depending on the event, applications should be submitted through the respective organisers, the conference office, or the local course organisers. For travel grants related to the DMG Annual Meeting, applicants must present their own contribution as first author. Travel grants are generally €100 and are usually paid during the respective event. For joint conferences, the amount of funding may vary.

Travel Grants for Doctoral Researchers and Postdoctoral Researchers

Doctoral researchers and postdoctoral researchers can apply for travel grants of up to €1,000 to present their research at international conferences. Applications for travel between March and August are generally due by 1 February, while applications for travel between September and February should be submitted by 1 August. Earlier applications are possible. Applications are submitted directly to the DMG and must include a letter of recommendation, a curriculum vitae including a list of publications, the planned abstract, and a cost estimate. The grant may be paid in advance. After the trip, recipients are asked to submit a brief expense report and a copy of their conference contribution. If the trip does not take place, the grant must be repaid.

Awards for Early-Career Scientists

The DMG Early-Career Award  is given at the annual DMG conference for outstanding contributions by early-career researchers (generally under 32 years of age, Master’s students and PhD students).

Furthermore, the DMG awards the Beate Mocek Award to early-career female researchers for outstanding achievements in the fields of petrology and geochemistry.
