Jonas Pape was awarded for his presentation, "Zr-in-Rutile Thermometer at UHT Conditions from Paragneisses in the Mafic Complex of the Ivrea Zone, Northern Italy," delivered at the joint annual meeting of the German Mineralogical Society and the Geological Association in Tübingen in 2013.
In an exceptionally clear and engaging presentation, Mr. Pape presented the results of his master's thesis on the incorporation and resetting of zirconium in rutile under ultra-high-temperature metamorphic conditions and during subsequent metamorphic cooling. He demonstrated that metamorphic temperatures of up to 1150°C can be reliably determined using the Zr-in-rutile thermometer. His findings show that the Zr-in-rutile thermometer is a highly suitable tool for reconstructing the evolution of rocks that have undergone ultra-high-temperature metamorphism.
Mr. Pape also impressed the audience during the subsequent discussion with his thorough scientific knowledge and expertise.
