Archean UHT metamorphism in the East Sahara Ghost Craton: Paul Ramdohr Award presented to Shreya Karmakar for microanalytical reconstruction of complex P-T-t paths in metapelites.

The Paul Ramdohr Award was presented to M.Sc. Shreya Karmakar, an early-career researcher at the Institute of Geosciences of Kiel University. She received the award in recognition of her presentation, "Archean UHT Metamorphism and Paleoproterozoic Reworking at Uweinat in the East Sahara Ghost Craton," which she delivered at the 1st European Mineralogical Conference in Frankfurt in 2012.

In her presentation, she introduced the results obtained during the first year of her doctoral research on the pressure–temperature–time (P–T–t) evolution of metapelites exposed in the Uweinat region. Based on petrographic investigations using optical microscopy, electron microprobe analyses of minerals, in situ monazite dating by electron microprobe, and pseudosection modeling, she reconstructed the geological evolution of these rocks. Her results revealed an ultra-high-temperature metamorphic event during the Archean at approximately 2.6 ± 0.1 Ga, followed by a second, distinct high-temperature metamorphic event during the late Paleoproterozoic at approximately 1.9 ± 0.1 Ga. In contrast, Pan-African crustal thickening and subsequent craton rifting are not reflected in the metamorphic history of the crust in the Uweinat region.
