Abraham Gottlob Werner Medal –For outstanding scientific achievements

Medal Recipients

2016 – Prof. Dr. Gerhard Brey

Decoding mantle petrology and deep Earth dynamics: Silver Werner Medal awarded to Prof. Gerhard Brey in recognition of his pioneering work on geothermobarometry, diamond genesis, and high-pressure experimental research.

The German Mineralogical Society awards the Abraham Gottlob Werner Silver Medal to Gerhard Brey in recognition of his outstanding achievements and contributions to the mineralogical sciences.

Gerhard Brey is an internationally renowned mineralogist, petrologist, and geochemist whose scientific work has fundamentally shaped our understanding of the properties and dynamics of the Earth's mantle. A defining feature of his research is the successful integration of experimental studies on the phase petrology of mantle rocks in both simple and complex model systems with investigations of natural high-pressure and mantle-derived rocks. In doing so, he has not only advanced international scientific knowledge but has also made major contributions to the development of experimental high-pressure techniques as well as trace element and isotope analytical methods for minerals and melts.

A large number of Gerhard Brey's pioneering studies focused on the experimental and empirical calibration of geothermobarometers for mantle rocks and their application to reconstructing geothermal gradients. His research has provided important insights into the origin and evolution of kimberlitic magmas, the stability of carbonates, and the genesis of diamonds in the Earth's mantle. Other influential studies examined trace element partitioning between minerals and melts and their significance for understanding metasomatic processes in the mantle. By applying radiogenic isotope systems to mantle rocks, he succeeded in constraining the timing of metasomatic events, providing important new insights into the spatial and temporal evolution of mantle dynamics.

With this medal, the German Mineralogical Society honors Gerhard Brey as a world-renowned mineralogist, petrologist, and geochemist, and as one of the Society's most distinguished representatives within the international geoscience community.
