2015 – Albrecht Hofmann

Decoding chemical geodynamics and oceanic crust recycling: Silver Werner Medal awarded to Prof. Albrecht Hofmann for his seminal contributions to mantle trace element and isotope geochemistry.

Dedicated to the memory of Abraham Gottlob Werner, the German Mineralogical Society awards the Abraham Gottlob Werner Silver Medal in recognition of outstanding scientific achievements.

This year, the medal was awarded to Albrecht Hofmann (Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, Columbia University, New York, USA) for his pioneering research on the geochemistry and evolution of the Earth's mantle.

Albrecht Hofmann is internationally recognized as one of the leading figures in chemical geodynamics. He has made fundamental contributions to the trace element and isotope geochemistry of basaltic magmas and to our understanding of the origin and evolution of their mantle sources. He was the first to comprehensively recognize the recycling of subducted oceanic crust and its contribution to the composition of mantle plumes, particularly those feeding the Hawaiian magmatic system. By honoring Albrecht Hofmann, the German Mineralogical Society recognizes a leading geochemist who quantitatively described the fundamental relationship between the depletion of incompatible elements in the Earth's mantle and the complementary enrichment patterns observed in continental rocks. At the same time, his work has greatly deepened our understanding of isotope systems involved in global geochemical transport processes and of the links between geochemical and geophysical observations.

The systematic analysis and interpretation of trace element signatures in igneous rocks and in oceanic and continental crust using "canonical trace element ratios" (sometimes referred to as the "Mainz ratios") are largely attributable to his pioneering work.

His influence on geochemistry as a fundamental discipline within the Earth sciences extends well beyond his own groundbreaking research and includes the establishment of an internationally renowned research group at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Mainz.

By awarding this medal to Albrecht Hofmann, the German Mineralogical Society honors a geoscientist whose contributions to geochemistry have left a lasting impact both in Germany and internationally.
