Victor Moritz Goldschmidt Award –For early career scientists in recognition ofoutstanding research conductedwithin the past five years

Award Recipients

2007 – Thomas Zack

The Victor-Moritz-Goldschmidt Prize is awarded to Dr. Thomas Zack for his contributions to our understanding of subduction zone metamorphism.

The German Mineralogical Society awards the Victor Moritz Goldschmidt Prize to Thomas Zack in recognition of his contributions to the understanding of subduction-related metamorphism, particularly his work on lithium isotope geochemistry and the calibration of a new thermometer for eclogites. His research has provided important insights into trace element signatures in metamorphic systems. Thomas Zack carried out detailed investigations of the behavior of lithium isotopes during the dehydration of subducting oceanic crust, and his results have become a benchmark for subsequent studies in this rapidly growing field of research. For many years, petrologists sought reliable thermobarometers for eclogites, and Thomas Zack succeeded in establishing a new trace element-based thermometer for these rocks. The methods he developed have since been adopted and applied by numerous research groups. Thomas Zack has made outstanding contributions to both igneous petrology and metamorphic geology and has earned widespread national and international recognition for his exceptional scientific achievements.
