2003 – Carsten Münker

Nb/Ta ratios and Hf isotope systematics: Victor Moritz Goldschmidt Award presented to Prof. Carsten Münker for key insights into Lunar origin and early Earth crust formation.

From the laudation:

“Carsten Münker has made particularly important scientific contributions to our understanding of magma genesis in subduction zones and to the temporal evolution of subduction systems. Owing to improved analytical methods, he was able to demonstrate differences in Nb/Ta ratios between the Earth, the Moon, and meteorites, leading to important new insights into the origin of the Moon. His investigations of Hf isotopes further showed that the Earth had already developed a continental crust, albeit of limited volume, before 4.4 Ga.”
