Unlocking Botswana’s mantle roots: Early Career Award winner Aleksandr Rakipov advances mantle geochemistry.

No poster award was presented in the previous year. Instead, the DMG awarded the Early Career Award twice in recognition of two outstanding oral presentations at EMC2024 in Dublin.

The award was presented to Max Hellers (University of Cologne) and Aleksandr Rakipov (Goethe University Frankfurt).

In his presentation, “Redox State and Metasomatism of the Lithospheric Mantle Beneath Letlhakane, Botswana: Insights into the Effects of Metasomatism on the Re–Os System,” Aleksandr Rakipov presented new insights into the complex processes shaping the lithospheric mantle beneath the Zimbabwe Craton.

By combining oxygen fugacity measurements of peridotite xenoliths with trace element analyses and Re–Os isotope systematics, he successfully identified the signatures of multiple metasomatic events and revealed their significance for the evolution of these ancient mantle roots.

His results shed new light on the interplay between oxidizing and reducing agents in the mantle, the transformation of diamond and graphite, and the influence of metasomatism on the Re–Os isotope system.

The study not only advances our understanding of mantle geochemistry but also proposes a new three-stage model for the evolution of the lithospheric mantle in this region. Aleksandr Rakipov's comprehensive and innovative approach exemplifies the high scientific standards recognized by the DMG Early Career Award and represents a significant contribution to mantle petrology.

The abstract of the presentation is available in the EMC2024 conference proceedings.

The DMG warmly congratulates Aleksandr Rakipov on this well-deserved award.
