2022 – Marie C. Gentzmann

From bauxite residue to valuable resource: Ramdohr Award winner Marie C. Gentzmann investigates the mineralogical pathways of scandium during ore processing.

The Paul Ramdohr Award is presented for the most outstanding student contributions at DMG Annual Meetings.

Marie C. Gentzmann (BAM, BGR, and Museum für Naturkunde, Berlin) received the Paul Ramdohr Award for her poster, also presented at GeoMinKöln 2022. In her contribution, “The Story of Sc in Bauxite Residues and Its Journey from Ore to Waste to Value,” she presented the results of a detailed mineralogical investigation of bauxite residues derived from different geological settings and examined the behavior of scandium during the extraction process by leaching. Her study combined wet-chemical, microtextural, and structural analyses to provide new insights into the transformation of scandium-bearing phases from ore to residue, depending on the characteristics of the primary bauxite and the selected leaching conditions.
