2023 – Victoria Kohn

From rutile inclusions in garnet to crystallographic interfaces: Beate Mocek Award winner Victoria Kohn decodes the origin of microstructures in deep rock systems.

This year's Beate Mocek Award is presented to Victoria Kohn (University of Vienna), who has been part of the international FWF–ARRS-funded research project “Mineral Inclusions in Garnet: Microstructures–Textures–Genesis” at the Department of Lithospheric Research since the end of 2019. The project is jointly funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) and the Slovenian Research Agency (ARRS).

As part of her doctoral research, she investigated rutile inclusions in garnet with the aim of identifying the controlling factors of mineral phase relationships within this system and drawing conclusions about the genesis of these mineral inclusions. Using a combination of two- and three-dimensional analytical techniques, she provided valuable new insights into the relationships between crystallographic and chemical intra- and intergranular processes.

In recognition of her dedicated, independent approach and her significant scientific contributions, Victoria Kohn has been awarded the Beate Mocek Award. She intends to use the prize money to attend the workshop “Fluid and Melt Inclusions Protagonists” in Palermo, where she will expand her expertise in the identification, characterization, and application of fluid and melt inclusions in both academic research and industry.
