2021 – Leanne Schmitt

From sedimentation to metamorphism: Beate Mocek Award winner Leanne Schmitt decodes the genesis of Lahn-Dill iron ores using micro- and nanoscale analytics.

As several outstanding applications were received, the award committee decided to present the Beate Mocek Award to two recipients this year.

In her doctoral project, “Geochemistry and Mineralogy of Volcano-Sedimentary Iron Ore Systems—from Sedimentation to Metamorphism,” Leanne Schmitt is reexamining the genesis of Lahn-Dill-type iron ores. Using modern micro- to nanoscale analytical methods, she aims to find clear evidence of the origin of the metals and the mineralization processes that led to this type of deposit, as well as to establish connections to other submarine volcanogenic metal systems.
