The Beate Mocek Award is dedicated to supporting mineralogical research by early-career female scientists, particularly in the fields of petrology and geochemistry.
This year, the award is presented to Jaayke Fiege (Leibniz University Hannover and the American Museum of Natural History, New York). In her doctoral research, she investigates the formation of iron oxide–apatite deposits, which are among the world's most important iron ore deposits. Her model suggests that during magma decompression, magnetite crystals may rise through attachment to exsolved gas bubbles. Her research combines the study of samples from a deposit in Chile with experimental simulations of these processes.
The prize money will support her participation in an international conference, where she will present the results of her research.
