Abraham Gottlob Werner Medal –For outstanding scientific achievements

Medal Recipients

2020 – Ekkehart Tillmanns

From the crystal chemistry of inorganic compounds to global leadership in science: Gold Werner Medal awarded to Prof. Dr. Ekkehart Tillmanns in recognition of his outstanding contributions to mineralogy and crystallography.

The Abraham Gottlob Werner Gold Medal is awarded by the German Mineralogical Society in recognition of outstanding service to the advancement of the mineralogical sciences.

This year, the DMG honors Ekkehart Tillmanns (University of Vienna) in recognition of his exceptional contributions.

Throughout his career, Ekkehart Tillmanns has played a leading role in fostering scientific exchange in the fields of mineralogy and crystallography. He has served as co-editor of Mineralogy & Petrology and the Zeitschrift für Kristallographie, as well as Associate Editor and later Chief Editor of the European Journal of Mineralogy. For many years, he was also a member of the Advisory Board of Physics and Chemistry of Minerals.

As a member of several national and international mineralogical societies, Ekkehart Tillmanns has actively contributed to their development. Within the German Mineralogical Society, he served as a member of the Advisory Board and as the Society's representative to the German Crystallographic Association (AGKr). Within the Austrian Mineralogical Society (ÖMG), he was a member of the Executive Board and has since been elected an honorary member. He also served on the Executive Committee of the International Mineralogical Association (IMA), first as Councillor and later as President, during which he organized the 2010 IMA General Meeting in Budapest.

Alongside these numerous leadership roles, Ekkehart Tillmanns has maintained an outstanding scientific career, documented by more than 185 publications in international scientific journals. His research focuses on the crystal chemistry of minerals and inorganic compounds and on their physicochemical characterization.

His achievements have been recognized through numerous prestigious honors, including the Distinguished Grantee Award of the International Centre for Diffraction Data (ICDD, USA) in 1998, the Erwin Schrödinger Prize of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in 2002, election as a Foreign Member of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences in 1999, and election to the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina in 2000.

By awarding the Abraham Gottlob Werner Gold Medal, the German Mineralogical Society honors Ekkehart Tillmanns as an internationally renowned mineralogist and crystallographer.
