Symmetry –Exploring Minerals from Every Angle
Symmetry: Exploring Minerals from Every Angle – this module invites students to discover the fascinating diversity of mineral shapes for themselves while exploring the underlying mathematical principles. Nine different minerals, with three specimens of each, encourage close observation and hands-on investigation. Guided by the accompanying instructions, observation becomes active experimentation: students identify rotational axes, recognise and compare geometric solids, and use the provided mirrors to locate mirror planes. Along the way, they are encouraged to consider where else symmetrical shapes can be found in their surroundings.
Several minerals from the Mohs hardness scale are included in sets of three, allowing students to compare their hardness directly. How hard are the individual specimens relative to one another, and what conclusions can be drawn about their potential uses?
Faceted glass gemstones provide a direct comparison with the mineral specimens, helping students understand the differences between glass and crystals and between manufactured and natural materials.
A sachet of potassium alum powder completes the module. Students can use it to carry out their own crystal-growing experiment and observe the process of crystal growth first-hand.
