Petrology & Petrophysics –The Stories Rocks Tell
The Section of Petrology and Petrophysics brings together scientists working on the formation, composition, and physical properties of rocks. Petrology investigates the processes that lead to the formation and transformation of igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks, ranging from melt generation in the Earth’s mantle to crystallization and metamorphism, as well as fluid–rock interactions. Petrophysics complements this perspective through the quantitative characterization of physical rock properties such as porosity, permeability, and elastic and electrical properties. These are essential both for understanding processes within the Earth and for applied fields such as geothermal energy, CO₂ storage, and mineral exploration.
The Section serves as a forum for scientific exchange within the DMG. It promotes connections between researchers working in field studies, laboratory experiments, analytical methods, and modelling, while providing early-career scientists in particular with a platform to present their work. A central part of the Section’s activities is its annual meeting, which is often organized jointly with the Section of Geochemistry.
