Joint Section Meeting of the DMG Sections Geochemistry and Petrology/Petrophysics 2023

Recap of the joint annual meeting of the DMG sections Petrology/Petrophysics and Geochemistry at the University of Bayreuth, including insights into the program, schedule, and award ceremony.

The DMG Section Meeting of the Petrology/Petrophysics and Geochemistry divisions took place this year on June 2 and 3. The annual meeting, which provides a platform especially for early-career researchers such as Master’s students, doctoral candidates, and postdocs to exchange ideas, was held on the campus of University of Bayreuth. The event was organized by Audrey Bouvier (Bayreuth), Esther Schwarzenbach (Fribourg, Switzerland), Matthias Willbold (Göttingen), and Roman Botcharnikov (Mainz).

The program began on June 2 with a guided tour of the laboratories of the Bavarian Geoinstitute. Following the official welcome, the oral sessions commenced. The first presentations, focusing on the formation of highly alkaline and carbonatitic magmatism, were based in part on results from experimental studies and analyses of natural samples.

The final talks of the day addressed ore deposit formation and the redistribution of phosphorus and volatile elements through deep-Earth processes.

The poster session in the late afternoon encouraged engaging discussions. Preliminary results from a wide range of research areas were presented and discussed in a relaxed atmosphere. The day concluded with a joint barbecue in front of the BGI.

The following day began with presentations on sulfide deposits and sulfide occurrences in meteorites, followed by talks offering insights into various analytical and experimental methods.

At the subsequent award ceremony, Ran Zhao (University of Bayreuth) received the prize for the best poster. Jie Xu (Goethe University Frankfurt) was awarded first place for the best oral presentation, while second place went to Benjamin Möller (University of Tübingen) and third place to Antonia Simon (University of Mainz).

We thank the organizers as well as all DMG members who made the meeting in Bayreuth possible. We are already looking forward to next year’s meeting.
