Kupferschiefer Excursion of the DMG Working Group on Raw Materials Research

The Kupferschiefer excursion of the DMG Working Group on Raw Materials Research took place from March 19–21, 2024, visiting mining and exploration sites in Thuringia, Saxony-Anhalt, and Brandenburg.

From March 19 to 21, 2024, the Kupferschiefer excursion of the DMG Working Group on Raw Materials Research took place, visiting former mining sites as well as current exploration projects in Thuringia, Saxony-Anhalt, and Brandenburg. A total of 15 geoscientists participated, including several attendees of this year’s 8th GOOD Meeting.

Highlights of the excursion included a visit to the drill core repository of the Löwenstern project of Anglo American Copper Germany GmbH in Suhl, the investigation of an approximately 80 m long geological profile (Upper Rotliegend–Zechstein) at the Gotanger on Clausberg near Eisenach, visits to mine dumps and exploration drill cores from the Sangerhausen and Mansfeld districts (Helbra area and the core repository of the State Office for Geology and Mining Saxony-Anhalt in Halle), as well as an in-depth insight into the exploration results of KSL Kupferschiefer Lausitz GmbH in Spremberg.

All participants gained a comprehensive impression of current Kupferschiefer exploration projects in Germany and made extensive use of the opportunity to engage in discussions with specialists on site. The participants would like to thank all involved companies and authorities for their warm welcome and the excellent organization of all activities.
