Anne Sturm specialised in volcanology, petrology, and geochemistry early in her academic career and has consistently pursued this focus throughout her doctoral research. As part of a DFG-funded project, she investigates the structure and temporal evolution of the continental crust beneath the Eifel intraplate volcanic field.
A particular focus of her research is the development of an innovative approach to dating maar eruptions using (U–Th)/He geochronology of zircons from crustal xenoliths. Using this method, she has already obtained new and robust age constraints for numerous volcanoes in the Eifel, significantly reducing previous uncertainties. Her results contribute to a better understanding of the dynamics of intraplate volcanic fields and are also relevant to volcanic hazard assessment. In addition, she combines different geochronological and geochemical methods to precisely date tephra deposits and establish their stratigraphic context.
Her research has been published internationally and presented at scientific conferences. Her profile is further strengthened by international research experience and her involvement in science communication, the Executive Board of the German Volcanological Society, and professional networks.
With her scientific achievements, methodological innovation, and commitment to the community, Anne Sturm is an outstanding early-career scientist in her field. The Beate Mocek Award will support her in further expanding her international network and advancing her research through participation in the 2nd Submarine Volcanism Workshop on Santorini.
We warmly congratulate her on this well-deserved award.
