2024 Max Hellers

Unlocking magmatic evolution through precise olivine analyses: Early Career Award winner Max Hellers decodes the history of the Delitzsch carbonatite complex.

Max Hellers

The German Mineralogical Society (DMG) is pleased to present the 2024 Early Career Award to Max Hellers (University of Cologne) in recognition of his outstanding presentation at EMC2024 in Dublin.

His presentation on olivine from the Delitzsch carbonatite complex in Saxony demonstrated how major and trace element analyses of alnöite, an ultramafic lamprophyre, from drill core samples using electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) can provide new insights into the complex history of magma evolution.

By using olivine as an archive of geological processes, his study showed how complex zoning patterns record the multi-stage evolution of magmatic systems. This work represents an important contribution to understanding the dynamic processes operating within the Earth's crust and upper mantle.

The combination of complementary analytical techniques opens new perspectives for investigating geological evolution and the internal processes of our planet, providing a solid foundation for future research in this field.

The abstract of the presentation is available in the EMC2024 conference proceedings.

The DMG warmly congratulates Max Hellers on this well-deserved award.
