The DMG mourns the loss of its Honorary Member Horst Saalfeld, who passed away on 21 March 2022 at the age of 101.

Born on 19 November 1920 in Königsberg, Horst Saalfeld studied mineralogy at the University of Marburg, where he received his doctorate in 1950. From 1952 to 1960, he was a research scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Silicate Research in Würzburg, where he also completed his habilitation. In 1960, he was appointed Professor of Structural Research at Saarland University, and in 1963 he accepted a chair in Mineralogy and Petrology at the University of Hamburg, where he remained until his retirement in 1986.

Horst Saalfeld served as President of the German Mineralogical Society (DMG) from 1972 to 1974 and as its Treasurer for a total of twelve years. In 1995, he was elected an Honorary Member of the DMG.

We will honor the memory of Horst Saalfeld with deep gratitude.
