The DMG mourns the loss of Professor Dr. habil. Herbert Pöllmann, who passed away unexpectedly on 5 May, shortly before his retirement.

Herbert Pöllmann was born on 30 June 1956 in the municipality of Waldsassen (Upper Palatinate, Germany). He completed his academic training at the University of Erlangen, where he received his diploma in Mineralogy in 1981, earned his doctorate in 1984, and completed his habilitation in 1991. Since 1994, he had been Professor of Mineralogy and Geochemistry at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, where he played a decisive role in shaping the discipline.

We have lost a highly respected colleague whose warmth, optimism, and sense of humor touched everyone around him. He was a passionate researcher and dedicated university teacher, a long-standing companion and friend to many of us, and an inspiring mentor to numerous generations of students.
