Raw Materials Research –Understanding Resources inthe Earth System

1. GOOD Meeting – Graduate Conference on “Geology of Ore Deposits”

The 1st GOOD Meeting for early-career researchers in economic geology took place from March 15–17 at TU Bergakademie Freiberg.

Following the idea of the Working Group on Raw Materials Research of the Deutsche Mineralogische Gesellschaft (DMG) to establish a conference for early-career scientists in the field of ore deposit geology in German-speaking countries, the first GOOD Meeting was held from March 15 to 17 of this year at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg. Organized by young researchers from the university and the Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology, the meeting provided PhD students, master’s students, and postdocs with the opportunity to present their research results.

The contributions of around 40 participants covered a broad range of topics in ore deposit geology, including mineralogical characterization of individual deposits, fluid inclusion studies, and the application of unconventional isotope systems. The two-day event was opened with an icebreaker party held in the ore deposit collection of the Mineralogical Institute in Freiberg. The lecture program was introduced each day by keynote presentations from Uta Alisch (Fugro Consult GmbH) and Hartwig Frimmel (University of Würzburg). At the end of the meeting, participants had the opportunity to visit the teaching and research mine Reiche Zeche in the Freiberg mining district.

The organizers thank all participants for their interesting contributions and discussions, as well as the DMG and Springer for their financial support. Following the successful launch of this format, the GOOD Meeting is intended to become an annual event hosted by different scientific institutions across the German-speaking region. Next year, the Leibniz University Hannover, supported by young scientists from the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources, will host the 2nd GOOD Meeting.
