DMG Joint Section Meeting Petrology/Petrophysics & Geochemistry 2026

The joint DMG Section Meeting of Petrology/Petrophysics and Geochemistry took place at the University of Potsdam on 12 and 13 June this year.

The meeting provided early-career scientists – including Master’s students, doctoral researchers, and postdocs – with an opportunity to present their research and engage in scientific exchange. The event was organised by Max Wilke and his team at the University of Potsdam together with Elis Hoffmann from Freie Universität Berlin.

Following the official welcome by the organisers, the scientific programme began on 12 June with presentations on crust formation, metamorphism, and fluid–rock interactions. A poster session provided further opportunities for lively scientific discussions. The first day concluded with a barbecue in a relaxed atmosphere.

On 13 June, the programme continued with presentations on experimental and analytical petrology. After the lunch break, contributions focused on the early Earth and planetary differentiation. In total, 18 oral presentations and 26 posters were presented. The scientific quality of both the contributions and the subsequent discussions was consistently high.

At the concluding award ceremony, Philipp Wiegel from Leibniz University Hannover received an award for his presentation “EPMA determination of Fe³⁺/Fe²⁺ ratios in silicate glasses using the flank method”, while Aaron Menke was recognised for his poster “Experimental insights into the role of mélanges in subduction zones”.

We would like to thank the organisers and all DMG members who contributed to the success of the meeting.

The next joint Section Meeting will take place in the week after Pentecost, from 21 to 22 May 2027, at Freie Universität Berlin.
