Theo Hahn (†2016)

An obituary honoring former DMG President Prof. Dr. Theo Hahn (1928–2016), outstanding Aachen crystallographer and recipient of the Abraham Gottlob Werner Medal.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Professor Dr. Theo Hahn on 12 February 2016, only a few weeks after his 88th birthday.

Professor Hahn served as Professor of Crystallography at RWTH Aachen University and Director of the Institute of Crystallography, which he founded, from 1963 to 1993. As an outstanding academic teacher and scientist, he gained international recognition for his major contributions to theoretical crystallography and symmetry theory, as well as for his long-standing work as editor and author of the International Tables for Crystallography. Theo Hahn was awarded the Abraham Gottlob Werner Medal of the German Mineralogical Society (DMG, 1997) and the Carl Hermann Medal of the German Crystallographic Society (DGK, 2001), of which he had been an Honorary Member since 1997. Among his many contributions to the scientific community, it is particularly noteworthy that he served as President of the DMG from 1982 to 1984 and as President of the International Union of Crystallography (IUCr) from 1984 to 1987.

The Institute of Crystallography at RWTH Aachen University and the international crystallographic community will remember Professor Hahn as an inspiring teacher, an engaging speaker, and, above all, as a wonderful person.
