The Paul Ramdohr Award is presented for the most outstanding student contributions at DMG Annual Meetings.
Eric Alexander Runge (University of Tübingen) received the award for his oral presentation at GeoMinKöln 2022, held in Cologne from 11 to 15 September. In his presentation, “The Taphonomic Fate of Biominerals in Hydrothermal Sulfide Systems – Implications for the Reconstruction of Microbial Life in Deep Time,” he demonstrated how he combined SEM–EDS, μXRD, Raman spectroscopy, and sequential iron extraction to compare the characteristics of synthetic and biogenic iron minerals with those found in modern and ancient hydrothermal sulfide deposits. His work provides important insights into the formation and preservation of biosignatures in hydrothermal environments and makes a significant contribution to reconstructing ancient microbial life.
