1999 – Thomas Stachel

From the laudation:

“Thomas Stachel recognized early on that the key to a better understanding of diamond formation in the Earth's mantle lies in the syngenetic mineral inclusions enclosed within diamonds. Building on an extensive and carefully compiled dataset of trace element compositions of inclusion minerals, together with studies of carbon and nitrogen isotopes and nitrogen aggregation in their host diamonds, Thomas Stachel developed a new model for the origin of diamonds and, in particular, for the evolution of the subcratonic lithospheric mantle. This model integrates the subduction of Archean oceanic crust, its metasomatism by methane-rich fluids, and the formation of refertilized lherzolites and diamonds.”
