Message from the Executive Board – GMIT 90

My two years as DMG chairman.

Dear members and friends of the DMG,

For the last time, I am allowed to address you here as the Chairman of DMG. For two exciting years, I held this position against the backdrop of a tumultuous time. How was this time from the perspective of a DMG chairman? Enriching This is my spontaneous response. The DMG is not just a "club." The DMG has many enthusiastic members, high scientific quality, and a leadership level that has never found it difficult to find new dedicated individuals. There is also a motivated group of young members who, very pleasingly, actively engage with legitimate concerns. Of course, there are the routine matters that are simply part of managing an organization. and. In these two years, we have reorganized member management, modernized the statutes, taken over the accounts, and always looked for and found people for tasks, most recently for the mineralogical DFG specialist committee. egium. Klaus-Dieter Grevel, Gerhard Franz, first Reinhard Fischer and then Horst Marschall in the inner board, as well as initially Andreas Nägele and recently Thomas Rose as treasurers, perform absolutely reliable and sometimes tedious work, for which I am very thankful! thank you very much! The COVID-19 pandemic has never been able to silence us either. bring. The executive board has spent many an evening in front of four "tiles," and the meetings of the general board were always lively, even digitally. lively. Exhausting, because GMIT relentlessly demanded "words from the chairman" reached.

Well, why not take the opportunity for some entertainment? entertainment? And so topics like "Geochemistry and Plants," "Doris Schachner," "Geo-Mineralogy at the Beginning of the Universe," "The German Geo-Societies: Out of the Comfort Zone?" and "Welcome to the Earth System" became the subjects. the topics. It's actually fun to write about something you never thot you could write about at all. can write about. What were the highlights? The introduction of a medal that bears the name of the first female professor of mineralogy in Germany. highlights? The introduction of a medal bearing the name of Germany's first female professor of mineralogy. and bears the name of the first professor of mineralogy in Germany. In any case, the workshop "Future of Mineralogy" in beautiful Bad Honnef in April 2022, attended by 60 members, including many who were quite a bit younger than me, passionately discussed the setbacks, the opportunities, the wishes, and also the future setup. debated. Definitely also the 100th annual conference in Cologne, together with our friends from the DGGV, with the festive colloquium, the "Four Generations Talk," the unforgettable party at "Quater 1," and a general meeting with 110 members.

And then the job of one of the vise presidents of DVGeo was added. Very intensively, with a vision for the future, an eye for the big picture, and the managing director Tamara Fahry-Seelig as an indefatigable driving force, we have completed an extensive program with colleagues from the other three DVGeo societies. Public symposia, panel discussions, the re-establishment of the "Conference of the Geosciences Departments," as well as a group to support large collaborative projects in the geosciences, have been initiated in the past two years. It works. ert. The geosciences can collaborate. ten.

And this brings me to the last and perhaps greatest topic: How do we shape the further collaboration with the other geoscientific societies? I personally am convinced that only together can we generate the impact with which our otherwise small disciplines can tackle the very great challenges of our time. Only in this way can we set a big exclamation mark in the public eye: Here we are, the disciplines that can help to somewhat secure the future of a beleaguered nature and beleaguered people! n!

With their diversity of topics, from the regulation of the Earth system to the new materials we will need in the future, DMG can play a crucial role here. Whether the process of coming together becomes a reality, and when it happens, we do not yet know. But regardless of that, I would like to appeal to all members to actively engage in the public scientific discourse. Sessions at our conferences, DVGeo symposia, GMIT, and especially the international Elements Magazine, in which we are the fourth largest parent company, are established vehicles with great reach. e. They are all waiting for our contributions. e!

Starting January 1, Horst Marschall from Frankfurt/Main will wield the DMG scepter. With Horst, we have an excellent new chairman who, I am sure, wants to further advance the DMG. For that, I wish him all the best. I myself will continue to support the core DMG board as Deputy Chairman for another year with advice and assistance.

I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and hopefully a less nerve-wracking year in 2023. I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and hopefully a less nerve-wracking year in 2023!
