In memory of those who shapedthe field of mineralogy

Friedrich Seifert (†2026)

The German Mineralogical Society mourns the loss of its honorary member, Prof. Dr. Friedrich Seifert, the founder and long-time director of the Bavarian Geological Institute (BGI), who passed away on May 7, 2026.

The DMG mourns the loss of its Honorary Member Professor Dr. Friedrich Seifert, founder and long-serving Director of the Bavarian Research Institute of Experimental Geochemistry and Geophysics (Bayerisches Geoinstitut, BGI) in Bayreuth.

He passed away on 7 May 2026, just one day before his 85th birthday.

Friedrich Seifert was one of the defining figures of modern geoscience. Through his vision and tireless dedication, he not only shaped the Bavarian Research Institute of Experimental Geochemistry and Geophysics into a world-renowned research institution, but also inspired and mentored generations of scientists.

In recognition of his outstanding achievements and his deep commitment to our community, he was elected an Honorary Member of the DMG (a detailed tribute to his life's work can be found in the article accompanying his Honorary Membership in GMIT 63).

With Friedrich Seifert, we have lost an outstanding scientist, a valued colleague, and an exceptional mentor. His scientific legacy and his lasting influence on mineralogy and geochemistry will not be forgotten.

Our deepest sympathies go to his family, his loved ones, and all who had the privilege of working with him.

We will honor his memory with deep gratitude.
