Mileko Coordination
We welcome Andrea Koch-Hillmaier to the mileko team. Andrea took over coordination of the mileko project on October 1 and can be reached at mileko@dmg-home.org. She succeeds Carolin Otte, who oversaw the DMG Working Group on Schools and Higher Education’s “Mineralogical Teaching Kit” (“mileko”) project for one year. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Caro and wish Andrea every success and, above all, much enjoyment in her new role!
Change in Leadership
As scheduled, the DMG presidency will change on January 1, 2025. Frank Schilling (KIT Karlsruhe, frank.schilling@kit.edu) will take over from Horst Marschall, who will continue to serve as vice president for another year. There will also be a change in leadership in the four sections:
Geochemistry: Hella Wittmann-Oelze (GFZ Potsdam) will take over from Audrey Bouvier (Bayreuth). Applied Mineralogy: Claudia Weidenthaler (MPI Mülheim/Ruhr) will take over from Daniel Vollprecht (Augsburg).Crystallography: Michael Fischer (University of Bremen) will take over from Uta Helbig (Nuremberg Tech). Petrology and Petrophysics: Max Wilke (University of Potsdam) takes over from Esther Schwarzenbach (Fribourg).
The terms of the elected advisory board members are also coming to an end: Many thanks to Ralf Dohmen (organizer of DMG doctoral courses) and Ellen Mallas (student advisory board member) for your work over the past four years! We welcome Marie Gentzmann (Berlin), who will be responsible for organizing the DMG doctoral courses together with Elena Sturm starting in January, and Liora Sarah Oelschläger (Heidelberg) as a student advisory board member. We wish you both much enjoyment and success in your work for our DMG!
Nominations for DMG Honors and Awards – Deadline: January 31, 2025
We invite you to submit nominations. The nomination process is simple and straightforward—no lengthy online forms required. Simply send a nomination letter with an academic justification (no more than two pages) and a resume to the Chair at frank.schilling@kit.edu and the Executive Director at kdgrevel@dmg-home.org. The nomination letter may be written by multiple people. For the Beate Mocek Prize, a letter of support from the nominee’s advisor must also be submitted. Further details can be found in the DMG Awards Statutes at www.dmg-home.org/fileadmin/user_upload/Statuten/Statuten-DMG-Auszeichnungen.pdf. The following awards are to be presented:
The Abraham-Gottlob-Werner Medal for outstanding scientific achievements; the Doris-Schachner Medal for significant contributions to the advancement of the mineralogical sciences; the Georg-Agricola Medal for outstanding achievements in the field of applied mineralogy; the Victor-Moritz-Goldschmidt Prize for young scientists under the age of 38 for particularly important work from the past five years and honorary memberships.
The Young Scientists’ Prize for early-career researchers (generally under the age of 32) is awarded for particularly outstanding presentations at the DMG Annual Meeting.
Encourage young female scientists to apply for the Beate Mocek Prize to fund a special project in mineralogy—particularly in geochemistry and petrology—typically prior to their dissertation.
